Mattresses for Moma

When rebel militia entered Moma last spring, they stole most of the mattresses in the hospital. The mattresses were the most valuable items in the hospital because the staff had the foresight to hide expensive medical equipment. As a result of the theft, bed frames (many in need of repair) are now covered only with grass or reed mats or filthy foam slabs.

Mattresses are a long-term investment in the hospital and the well-being of its patients. A mattress decreases time spent in the hospital because it provides for better rest; a mattress can be scrubbed, disinfected, and washed thus preventing further infections; a stable mattress promotes wound healing—particularly from burns; and mattresses make it safer to move patients.

The patients at Moma Hospital deserve better than reed mats or dirty foam—they deserve decent mattresses. We have located mattresses ($100 each) and sheets that are made in the Congo—thus contributing to the local economy.
