Bad Roads Make Travel Difficult

Coming thrucaringrass2

This is the truck with medical supplies making its way to Moma through high grass (tshisuka) at dusk. Yes, there is a road underneath! The truck is being led by  a motorcycle escort. Because of road conditions, motorbikes and motorcycles are the primary mode of travel throughout the country. Guards accompany the truck on the look-out for armed pirates.

Things really haven’t changed that much. The second picture was taken in 1956 when the Dickersons drove half way across the Congo to get to Moma. We had a knack for finding every pothole–some 3-4-feet deep! But thankfully, locals were always there to help dig us out.
