Water Tanks “Bike” to Moma

In February we shared pictures of mattresses being delivered to Moma Hospital on bicycles. Last week, Dr. Christoph has once again deployed the “Bike Brigade”—this time to deliver water tanks.

Two 500-liter (132-gallon) tanks were strapped to bikes and “walked” from Luiza to Moma, a trek of 25 miles. The tanks weigh approximately 40 pounds each, but their dimensions make the journey awkward and cumbersome, at best.

Why water tanks? Because Moma sits on a high ridge, digging a well to reach ground water is not practical. Therefore, the hospital depends on “water harvesting,” which uses tanks to catch rainwater—much like the old rain barrels that farms used to have here in the U.S.

The original water tanks at Moma Hospital were damaged beyond repair a year ago when rebel militia swept through the area burning, looting and destroying whatever they could find.

Once again—thanks to generous donations to Friends of Moma Hospital—we were able to make a major difference in the quality of health care at the hospital.
